To decide which genre I am going to make my new music
magazine fall under, I am going to look more closely into three genres. I will
find out who the primary target audience is, look at key artists that make
music in a certain genre and what type music the genre entails.
Electronic
Electronic music is music that is created using electronic
musical instruments and electronic music technology. It was categorised with
Western art music until the late 1960s. This is because music technology became
more affordable and had a higher availability, so music produced with
electronics became increasingly more common and more popular. Electronic music
varies from experimental art music to electronic dance music in this day in
age.
As there is a wide variety of different styles of this genre
of music, it is difficult to state a primary target audience, especially as it
has been a popular genre for such a long time. With electronic dance music, it
is usually focused at the younger generation, most popular between the ages of
16-25. It is not targeted to a particular gender, as both males and females
like this genre of music.
Some of the bands / musicians that create music in this
genre are:
- Chase & Status
- Daft Punk
- The Chemical Brothers
- Fatboy Slim
- Eric Prydz
- David Guetta
- Basement Jaxx
- Calvin Harris

genre:
Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop is a music genre that consists of rhythmic music
that is often accompanied by rap. It also sometimes includes sampling and beat
boxing. Hip-Hop denotes the practice of the entire life sculpture. The terms hip-hop music and rap music are often used together or as one thing, but rapping is
not a component that is required in hip-hop music, other elements such as
DJing, scratching and beat boxing are also incorporated in this genre.
As Hip-Hop music has many sub genres, the target audience of
the music is quite large. This genre of music firstly targeted over 18’s in the
1970’s when this culture first began because of the explicit content in the
lyrics. Since then, sub genres have been created that target a much younger
audience starting at around 11. Sub genres such as gangster rap or battle rap
are mainly targeted to younger males because of the violent content that is
featured in the lyrics and videos of the music. However, sub genres that don’t
contain violence or influence inappropriate language such as conscious rap or
alternative rap target a larger audience. Less violent sub genres target a
younger audience as well as females because it is calmer. Overall, Hip-Hop
music targets a wide range of different demographics because of the many
varieties of sub genres.
Some of the bands / musicians that create music in this
genre:
- Kanye West
- Far East Movement
- Black Eyes Peas
- Limp Bizkit
- Outkast
- Salt ‘n’ Pepper

genre:
R & B
R & B is a music genre that combines elements of rhythm
and blues, pop, soul, funk and hip-hop. The abbreviation “R & B” has
originated from the traditional rhythm and blues music. In the 1980’s, after
the decline of disco, the African-American music originated which uses the term
R & B to often describe it. R & B is often referred to as urban
contemporary. Drum machine-packed rhythms are used to create the polished
production style of this genre; a jazz feel was also given to this music with a
saxophone-laced beat, but this was more common before 1995. Usually, a smooth
vocal arrangement is used with this style. This genre is being more
increasingly influenced by hip-hop / dance inspired beats.
Females aged 14-19 are the primary target audience for R
& B music. This could mainly be females because of the relevance or lyrics
to the songs. This age range of people will mostly still be in education and
are more likely to go to concerts or spread the word of this genre by
discussing it with their friends of commenting on it on social networking sites
like Twitter or Facebook, or trying to contact their favourite artist to
support them. This target audience will mainly like in broad countries such as
the UK or USA because these artist will be more popular in these areas as these
are the places they are more likely to tour. The target audience could be from
many demographics because there are many artists in this genre that may appeal
to lots of different people. Many of the songs from this genre express feelings
about love of being heartbroken which is probably one of the main reasons that
it is mostly teenage girls that are interested in this genre as these are
stereotypical songs for females. Females will also find female R & B
artists to be role models because they like the way they dress in their music
videos and the choreography that is often done to their songs. Females are also
attracted to the male artist however, because they will find them attractive
and are seen to be perfect by their adoring fans because of the way they dress,
look and the lyrics that they sing. This would be a reason for them to listen
to this genre of music – for them to want something realistic and to feel good
about themselves. The secondary target audience for this genre is quite broad;
19-24 year old females and 14-24 year old males. This audience are most likely
to still be in education. The females may listen to this music because it is a
popular genre at the parties they attend so they will dance and sing along to
this genre. The secondary target audience may not see their favourite R & B
artist in concert, but just enjoy listening to this music in their spare time
or at parties. The young males that enjoy listening to this genre of music are
of a smaller group than the females that are fans of R & B. The songs are
not generally targeted at males as the lyrics will usually attract more females
because they are more likely to relate to the songs, but males will like to
listen to this genre maybe more because they like the style of music than
relate to the lyrics. Again, the secondary target audience could be wealthy of
poor and will mainly live in countries where the artists in this genre of music
are more popular because that is where they are from or visit while touring.

- Alicia Keys
